A recent study has revealed that the average person spends 90 minutes a day on their phone. Other studies show that cell phone users look at their devices an average of 81 times a day! These figures may not sound like a lot but that amounts up to 23 days a year and 3.9 years of the average person’s life is spent staring at their phone screen. Is it any wonder that more people are experiencing neck pain that isn’t caused by a car accident or other injury?
Time spent looking at your phone is also time spent negatively affecting your posture, and spinal health. The average human head weighs 10-12 pounds. As the head tilts or angles forward, the cervical spine’s (neck) muscles, tendons, and ligaments support the head during movement and when static; such as holding the head in a forward tilted position. Even the neck’s inter-vertebral discs are involved and help absorb and distribute the forces exerted on the neck. A 15 degree forward tilt, the kind most commonly seen by a person using a cell phone or other electronic device, may equate to the head weighing 27 pounds. The greater the angle of tilt, the great the strain placed on the cervical structure of the body.
At North Atlanta Chiropractic Center, we see patients who are experiencing neck pain for many reasons. Sometimes, the reason is not apparent to the patient. During the examination consultation, our chiropractors talk about the negative affects of time spent on electronic devices like cell phones, tablets and even desk tops. Our chiropractors offer treatment for the pain, like use of the Posture Pump. Come in to see what using a Posture Pump can do to relieve your pain, restore a healthy cervical curve and reduce and correct forward head/neck caused by time spent on cellular devices, laptops and desktops.
We all rely on this technology; it is important to our business and social lives. We need to seek proper chiropractic treatment to combat the negative physical affects of using these devices.
Medical studies have proven that water regulates your body temperature and lubricates your joints. It also helps transport nutrients to give you energy and keep you healthy. If you’re not properly hydrated, your body can’t perform at its highest level. You may experience fatigue, muscle cramps, dizziness, or more serious symptoms. When you are recovering from an injury, your body needs to be properly hydrated to help in the healing process. The doctors at North Atlanta Chiropractic Center would like to remind you to stay hydrated, especially in this very hot and humid summer season. It is also important to follow the recommended intake throughout the year.
How much water should we drink each day? “The Institute of Medicine determined that an adequate intake (AI) for men is roughly about 13 cups (3 liters) of total beverages a day. The AI for women is about 9 cups (2.2 liters) of total beverages a day.”
Make a healthy change by simply following the daily intake fluid requirements. It is easy to do, and will have many benefits for you. Try following this advice from the Nutrition Department of The Mayo Clinic :
- Drink a glass of water or other calorie-free or low-calorie beverage with each meal and between each meal
- Drink water before, during and after exercise
- Always seek the advise of your doctor and discuss any concerns that you may have.
You have visited our Chiropractor, had a thorough exam, and now you have a wellness plan designed to keep you healthy and enjoying your life. Part of that wellness plan may be strengthening exercise and stretches, prescribed by your chiropractor, to lessen your back or neck pain and increase flexibility in your joints and muscles. These stretches and exercises are vital to the success of your treatment plan whether you are being treated for pain after a car accident, or are seeking to improve your overall health with the benefits of chiropractic care at North Atlanta Chiropractic Center. The American College of Sports Medicine suggests that early morning stretching is especially effective for everyone.
When you wake in the morning, your body feels the need to stretch to increase flexibility and range of motion and relieve the stress that sleeping in one position overnight can cause. If you are having trouble sleeping because of pain caused by a back or neck injury, morning stretches are important to the healing process. If your reason for seeing our chiropractor is overall wellness, the prescribed stretches need to become part of your daily activities and are as important as eating well and staying hydrated.
Today’s stretch is focused on the neck area. It is suggested that this be done in the shower, after the heat of the water has warmed the muscles of your neck. Do this stretch gently and slowly, while taking deep breaths. Doing this stretch each morning will increase your range of motion, lessen any neck stiffness or pain you may have and increase blood flow to the muscles.
Stop any stretching that increases pain, and call the office. Report the benefits you feel when you come in for your adjustments. GET HEALTHY! GET ADJUSTED!
